About

A tool suite for people who work for themselves, with a reference library around it.

What this is

Quarterly Desk is a set of calculators for freelancers, 1099 contractors and one-person businesses in the United States, with reference material built around them. It is not a blog with a calculator bolted on. The tools come first and the articles exist to explain what the tools compute.

Why it is built that way

Because a number you can run against your own income is worth more than a page explaining a rule in general. Someone searching "how much should I set aside for taxes" does not want the mechanics of Schedule SE. They want a figure they can act on, and then — if they choose — the reasoning behind it.

It also survives better. A general explainer of self-employment tax can be summarised away by a search engine in three sentences. A calculator that takes your income, your state and your filing status and shows its work cannot be, because the value is in the computation rather than in the prose.

Who runs it

Adrian Vance, working alone. Everything here is written, built and checked by one person, which is worth knowing when you are deciding how much weight to give it.

No credentialed tax professional reviews these pages. Theeditorial policy explains exactly what the review process is and what it cannot cover.

How it makes money

Display advertising, and affiliate commissions on some pages. Ads never sit above the answer you came for and never appear inside a calculator.

Where a calculator feeds a recommendation, it returns the honest result even when that costs the commission — if an S-corp election does not pay off for your numbers, the tool says so. Seeaffiliate disclosure.

Your numbers stay on your device

Calculator inputs — income, filing status, state — never reach our servers. Everything is computed in your browser and the result lives in the URL. We could not sell your financial details if we wanted to, because we never receive them.
