Disclaimer
Information, not advice. The distinction matters and is not a formality.
Not tax advice
Everything here is general information about United States federal tax rules as they apply to self-employed people. It is not tax, legal, accounting or financial advice, it is not tailored to your situation, and reading it creates no professional relationship of any kind.
No credentialed review
No Enrolled Agent, CPA or attorney reviews these pages. Theeditorial policy sets out what our process does cover: sourcing every figure to primary IRS material and testing the arithmetic. It does not cover professional judgement about your facts.
Estimates are estimates
The calculators produce planning figures. They exclude credits, itemised deductions, carryovers, and — for most states — state income tax entirely. Your actual liability will differ, sometimes substantially. Do not file from these numbers.
Tax law changes
Rules and thresholds change, sometimes mid-year and sometimes retroactively. Each constant carries its verification date, visible onMethodology. A page whose figures have gone past their shelf life is marked "under review" and removed from search indexing until re-checked — but between a change and our noticing it, a page can be out of date.

- You are deciding on an entity structure, not just modelling one
- You have employees, inventory, or income in more than one state
- You received a notice from a tax authority
- The amount at stake is larger than a professional's fee — which is most of the time
